Yup, there’s a person in there.

The thing that I loved about the convention is that everyone was surrounded by what they loved! Whether it was the fangirls squealing when Sephiroth walked by them (totally not me, I swear, I waited for the Sephiroth, Cloud, Lulu, Squall crew), or fanboys dancing to Thriller in the Masquerade, EVERYONE was having fun. Some people were having passionate conversations about how to survive zombies! Some people were playing DDR or RockBand with absolute strangers! It was just beautiful to know that soooo many people in the convention were connected by their passion!

I always feel blessed when I come home from such functions to the love of my life, my 80 degree office, and my work! There are so many people who come home from their days just wishing it was Friday… or a vacation.

All I can say is do what you love. It’s the only way you’ll love what you do.

Oh and yes, I am totally cosplaying next time =)

I’ve heard sob stories from people who contracted other designers. The worse stories are of designers who design websites with no idea on how to code them. DESIGNERS, WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU TAKE ON A JOB YOU CAN’T HANDLE?!

Being a designer myself, I get frustrated by other designers who bring down the designing profession. It’s almost like their menu options are:

As a designer, you should have a system of how to design, and another system on how to handle. Each project is different, designing is not.

Designers, if you have a question about the concept, contact your client.

Clients, if you want something new in the concept, contact your designer.

The phone works in both ways AND you burn 0.6 calories when you pick up the phone! (Designers are not math majors so don’t quote me on that).

And clients, remember that when you contract someone for a project, you’re allowed to contact us 5 times a day to see what the progress is. It will annoy us if you really do contact us that many times, but as designers, we understand that the project is your product, your baby, your precious!

The charity work was canceled due to their plumbing issues (very surprised they didn’t relocate), the Superbowl party was a bust due to the roads being in horrible conditions, and now I’m waiting to see if it will be possible to go to this anime convention… but there’s a silver lining to all this!!!

I can work from any location =) And man am I grateful! All I hear about is everyone else going crazy with cabin fever, but when Monday came around, I still had my regular work schedule.

A woman called to make reservations, “I want to go from Chicago to Hippopotamus, New York” The agent was at a loss for words. Finally, the agent: “Are you sure that’s the name of the town?” “Yes, what flights do you have?” replied the customer. After some searching, the agent came back with, “I’m sorry, ma’am, I’ve looked up every airport code in the country and can’t find a Hippopotamus anywhere.” The customer retorted, “Oh don’t be silly. Everyone knows where it is. Check your map!” The agent scoured a map of the state of New York and finally offered, “You don’t mean Buffalo, do you?” “That’s it! I knew it was a big animal!”

As a professional, the best way I’ve found to dealing his stressful times, is finding what exactly is negative about the situation and making it comical. In the end, life to short to let the stress get to you, not to mention too much stress is unhealthy. Even as a normal person, always live life by finding the brighter side of whatever you’re dealing with in your life.

1) Comic Sans is the bane of a designers’ existence. There are sooo many other fonts out there, let your designer show you a few.

2) Cats/Kittens do not give a design its character… unless it’s bad. Of course if your website is icanhascheezburger.com, then no worries. This goes for any “cute” figures such as puppies, glitter hearts, unicorns, etc. Think about your product and clients’ needs and that’s where you’ll find your design.

3) It is possible to use too many different fonts. As a base, start with your body text font, title text font, caption text font, and logo text font. Even these different types of text do not need to be different fonts. It’s all about your design and what it needs.

4) Try using DaFont.com, ColorSchemeDesigner.com, and istock.com if you need help getting the initial concept of your design together. Your designer will sort it all out.

5) Your branding is your first impression. Your company’s logo is sooo important, I cannot stress this enough. A logo should be timeless, convey your company’s essence, and be original. In this day and age where everything has been done before, it’s not impossible to stand out.

Initial Thoughts: Oh thank god. The design is definitely dorky but I think it adds to its charm. I will admit that I have not mastered how to handle an umbrella without getting rained on, and now I know it’s because of its poor design and not me! Thanks Nubrella!

FTW: Check out their website here. Their rotating images are kinda hilarious, especially the guy on the John Deere. I love that you don’t have to use your hands to carry this product, honestly I can go on and on about its design (it’s an umbrella that doesn’t poke people, it doesn’t invert, it’s not trying to be anything else). Proof that even everyday products can be improve. It’s the rainy day spork, simply awesome!

FTL: $49… are you serious? With $15 shipping added, thus making the purchase total $64. Maybe it’s because I’m not rich and famous that I find many of these up and coming products’ flaws in their price, but if I were to come up with a product, I’d set it up so that eventually it would be sold in Wal-Mart so that anyone could afford it.

Final Thought: This product is awesome. Being the geek that I am, I can think of a few cosplay outfits to use with this (think spaceships where you’re the pilot my fellow geeks). The functionality of this product seems perfect. However, I think the price is absurd. If you’re going to charge $64 with shipping for something that’ll be used at most 40 days out of a year (less with global warming), then put some sort of guarantee on your product.

Ever since I’ve reorganized my office, it’s become hot spot for the 2 cats I own. A hot spot because my desk is located next to the radiator, and when the radiator isn’t on, I turn on the electric heater. I am not a fan of cold temperatures and neither are my cats. My cats are fairly well-mannered… unless it’s lunch time and they’re starving… Nevertheless, here are a few steps on how I keep my cats under control:

1) Maintain Territory: I do not let my cats on my desk. I’ve placed a towel on the floor next to the heater and a cat bed in the room. Sometimes I’ll allow Eva or Buddha on my lap (they’re a source of heat too), but that’s as close as they get to my work area.

2) Cover Your Plugs: Make sure your plugs are not easily accessible by your cats. An electrified kitty is not a happy kitty.

3) Cats love windows: In the morning, I’ll open the blinds. For the 8 hours my cats seem to be awake for in a given day, they’ll spent about 1 hour staring out the window.

4) Toiletries and food should stay outside of the office: One, the scent of cat food or the litter box is gross. Two, if the cat makes a mess, you’ll have to take a break from your work to clean it up. Three, this goes back to the maintain territory concept. Set up one place in your home for cats to eat, another place for them to do their business, and every other area in your home is now a place for them to sleep!

5) Cat nip is your friend: If your office cat needs attention or is becoming too rowdy, break out the cat nip. I love my cats and will occasionally make sure they feel loved and spoiled. However, when it’s time for work, it’s time for work, no excuses. Cats go CRAZY for cat nip. Place it in a different room away from your office and let your cats enjoy the cat nip.
